Hyponatremia as prognostic factor and poor survival in small cell lung cancer

Objective: Hyponatremiais reported approximately 15% in small cell lung cancer (SCLC). The aim of thisretrospective study is to present data on clinical significance of hyponatremiain an unselected contemporary SCLC patient population with limited disease (LD)and extensive disease (ED). Method: We analysed data of 631 patientswith SCLC from July 2006 to September 2013 in Zhejiang cancer hospital.Kaplan-Meier and Log-Rank test were used to analyze the data. Prognosticfactors were analyzed by multivariate Cox proportional hazards model. Result:Hyponatremia was present in 103 out of 631 (16.3%) patients with SCLC.Hyponatremia was associated with significantly shorter median survival (SCLCall patients: 11.4 vs 14.5 months, P<0.001). There were significantdifferences in overall survival between hyponatremia before treatment andduring treatment groups (9.3vs13.4 months, P=0.017). In the hyponatremiagroup, multivariate analyses revealed that severe hyponatremia level was anindependent factor for patients with SCLC. Conclusion: The retrospectivestudy indicated that hyponatremia of SCLC were of poor prognosis and the severehyponatremia had a worse prognosis.
